Your next stepDiscuss your circumstances General guide

01 / The starting point

What needs to line up.

A useful assessment looks at the requirements together, in the context of your circumstances.

  • Hold a valid Confirmation of Enrolment for eligible Australian study and appropriate Overseas Student Health Cover, unless exempt.
  • Meet the Genuine Student requirement: studying must be your primary reason for applying. A possible future permanent residence application does not itself count against you.
  • Meet applicable English, financial, health and character requirements; students under 18 need approved welfare arrangements.

A summary of key criteria, not a complete eligibility test. Stream-specific requirements and exceptions need individual assessment.

02 / Prepare with purpose

The evidence behind
your story.

  • Enrolment confirmation, passport and health cover details.
  • Explain your current circumstances, course and provider choice, and how the course benefits your future.
  • Support your Genuine Student answers with study history, employment details and evidence of personal and economic circumstances.

Keep records accurate and consistent. Agree a secure method before sharing personal documents.

03 / Understand the stages

A clearer view of
the process.

  1. 01

Check the current application-location rules before lodging.

  2. 02

Gather the required evidence and submit online through ImmiAccount.

  3. 03

Keep enrolment and contact information current and follow your grant conditions.

04 / Make informed decisions

Details that matter.

  • Rules changed on 2 October 2026. Most applicants must apply offshore; onshore applications and family inclusion require specific exemptions. Obtain a current assessment.
  • Work is generally limited to 48 hours per fortnight while courses are in session; research-degree exceptions apply.
  • Course admission does not establish visa eligibility. Check current fees and requirements with Home Affairs.

05 / Plan realistically

Costs, timing
and expectations.

Understand the total

Government charges, professional fees and expenses such as assessments, tests or translations are separate. Confirm the current charges and agreed scope before committing.

Allow for uncertainty

Published processing times are indicative. Individual cases, evidence requests and programme settings can affect timing. Avoid relying on an expected decision date for irreversible plans.
