01 / The starting point
What needs to line up.
A useful assessment looks at the requirements together, in the context of your circumstances.
- Your partner must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, with an approved sponsorship.
- Be in Australia when applying and satisfy the genuine spouse or de facto relationship requirements.
- De facto applicants generally need 12 months in that relationship before applying; specified exceptions include qualifying relationship registration.
A summary of key criteria, not a complete eligibility test. Stream-specific requirements and exceptions need individual assessment.
02 / Prepare with purpose
The evidence behind
your story.
- Identity, relationship and sponsor-status documents.
- A coherent relationship history supported by records of your shared life.
- Required health and character evidence, with updated material for the permanent stage.
Keep records accurate and consistent. Agree a secure method before sharing personal documents.
03 / Understand the stages
A clearer view of
the process.
- 01
Review your current visa conditions and onshore application eligibility.
- 02
Prepare the combined partner application and associated sponsorship.
- 03
Permanent-stage eligibility normally begins two years after the combined application; this is not a promised decision date.
04 / Make informed decisions
Details that matter.
- Marriage or relationship registration alone does not establish all visa criteria.
- Report relationship changes promptly. Special provisions may apply after separation, family violence or a partner’s death.
- Check your actual visa and travel conditions before leaving Australia during processing.
05 / Plan realistically
Costs, timing
and expectations.
Understand the total
Government charges, professional fees and expenses such as assessments, tests or translations are separate. Confirm the current charges and agreed scope before committing.
Allow for uncertainty
Published processing times are indicative. Individual cases, evidence requests and programme settings can affect timing. Avoid relying on an expected decision date for irreversible plans.
