01 / The starting point
What needs to line up.
A useful assessment looks at the requirements together, in the context of your circumstances.
- Be under 45 when invited and have at least competent English at that time.
- Nominate an eligible occupation and hold a suitable skills assessment that meets the applicable timing rules.
- Meet the points test and receive an invitation. Health, character and other visa requirements also apply.
A summary of key criteria, not a complete eligibility test. Stream-specific requirements and exceptions need individual assessment.
02 / Prepare with purpose
The evidence behind
your story.
- Skills assessment, qualifications and records supporting claimed skilled employment.
- English evidence and documents supporting every points claim, including any partner-related claims.
- Identity, family relationship and character documents; health examinations when required.
Keep records accurate and consistent. Agree a secure method before sharing personal documents.
03 / Understand the stages
A clearer view of
the process.
- 01
Assess your occupation and evidence before submitting an expression of interest through SkillSelect.
- 02
Keep your EOI accurate as circumstances change. An EOI is not a visa application.
- 03
If invited, lodge the application with supporting documents within the invitation deadline.
04 / Make informed decisions
Details that matter.
- The minimum threshold of 65 points does not guarantee an invitation.
- Evidence must support the score on your invitation; a calculator result is only indicative.
- Check your existing visa and travel rights while waiting. Permanent stay and the travel facility are different.
05 / Plan realistically
Costs, timing
and expectations.
Understand the total
Government charges, professional fees and expenses such as assessments, tests or translations are separate. Confirm the current charges and agreed scope before committing.
Allow for uncertainty
Published processing times are indicative. Individual cases, evidence requests and programme settings can affect timing. Avoid relying on an expected decision date for irreversible plans.
