01 / The starting point
What needs to line up.
A useful assessment looks at the requirements together, in the context of your circumstances.
- Direct Entry usually requires an eligible occupation, three years of relevant experience, a positive skills assessment, competent English and age under 45; exemptions may apply.
- Temporary Residence Transition requires an eligible visa and usually two years of eligible sponsored work in the preceding three years, plus employer nomination.
- Labour Agreement applicants must meet the requirements of the employer’s agreement, including applicable age, skills and English criteria.
A summary of key criteria, not a complete eligibility test. Stream-specific requirements and exceptions need individual assessment.
02 / Prepare with purpose
The evidence behind
your story.
- Employer nomination reference and evidence of the nominated role.
- Qualifications, work records, English evidence and any required skills assessment or professional registration.
- For transition cases, records of eligible sponsored employment and visa history; identity, family, health and character evidence also matter.
Keep records accurate and consistent. Agree a secure method before sharing personal documents.
03 / Understand the stages
A clearer view of
the process.
- 01
Choose the stream after checking both the applicant and employer criteria.
- 02
Coordinate the nomination and visa application, with evidence specific to that stream.
- 03
Respond to requests and review the decision, employment expectations and travel facility.
04 / Make informed decisions
Details that matter.
- Holding a 482 visa does not automatically establish eligibility for permanent residence.
- A nomination must satisfy its own requirements; withdrawal or an unavailable position can affect the visa.
- Home Affairs expects you to work for the nominating employer for at least two years after grant.
05 / Plan realistically
Costs, timing
and expectations.
Understand the total
Government charges, professional fees and expenses such as assessments, tests or translations are separate. Confirm the current charges and agreed scope before committing.
Allow for uncertainty
Published processing times are indicative. Individual cases, evidence requests and programme settings can affect timing. Avoid relying on an expected decision date for irreversible plans.
